About FileScan

FileScan is a free online service that scans uploaded files for viruses and malware using the ClamAV antivirus engine.

02

How to use

1. Drag & drop a file, click to browse, or paste with ⌘/Ctrl + V. 2. Upload and scanning start automatically. 3. See the verdict — green for clean files, red when a threat is detected. 4. Use the SHA-256 hash to get a second opinion on VirusTotal.

03

About ClamAV

ClamAV is an open-source antivirus engine capable of detecting trojans, viruses, malware, and other threats. The virus definition database is updated regularly.

04

Privacy

Uploaded files are processed in memory only and discarded once the scan completes. File contents are never shared with third parties. The SHA-256 hash is calculated inside your browser.

05

Limitations

The maximum file upload size is 10MB. All file formats are supported, but 100% detection is not guaranteed. For critical files, we recommend verifying with multiple security tools.

It is matched against millions of signatures, the verdict is returned, and the data is discarded immediately.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Is it really free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it's completely free. No account and no software installation are needed — just drop a file in your browser.

02

Is it safe to scan files online? Are uploaded files stored?

Files are processed in server memory only and never written to disk. They are discarded as soon as the scan finishes and are never shared with third parties. Some online scanning services share uploaded files with security researchers; FileScan never stores or shares your file.

03

What kinds of files can I check?

Any format up to 10MB — PDFs, Office documents such as Word and Excel, executables (.exe), images, scripts and more. Archives such as ZIP are unpacked and their contents are scanned too. Password-protected archives cannot be inspected.

04

Does it work on my phone (iPhone / Android)?

Yes. It works directly in the browser on iPhone, iPad and Android. Because iOS makes it hard for antivirus apps to inspect files on the device, it's a handy way to check attachments you receive by email or chat.

05

If it says "No threats found", is the file definitely safe?

It means the file didn't match any known virus or malware signature. No scanner can detect 100% of threats, especially brand-new malware. For important files, use the link on the result screen to get a second opinion on VirusTotal.

06

What should I do if a threat is detected?

Don't open the file — delete it. If you've already opened it, run a full scan with your device's security software and consider changing your passwords. If someone you know sent it, let them know their device may be infected.

07

Which antivirus engine do you use?

FileScan uses ClamAV, a widely used open-source antivirus engine. Its virus definition database is updated automatically; the current version is shown at the bottom of the page.
